April 17, 2019

On April 15-16, Sochi hosted the main event of the world nuclear industry - XI International Forum ATOMEXPO 2019. This year the event slogan was held «Nuclear for a better life». The participants of the Forum became more than 3,500 visitors from 74 countries. It was the first time, when the business program was developed by International Program Committee, which consisted of: William Magwood, the Director General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, Agneta Rising, the Director General of the World Nuclear Association (WNA), Jacques Regaldo, the Ex-Chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), Luis Echavarri, the Ex-CEO of the OECD NEA and others.

In opining the plenary discussion Sergey Kirienko, the First Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom addressed the world community: «According to the UN sustainable development goals it is necessary to resolve two global challenges: save the mankind from poverty and heal the planet. Atomic energy is capable to play a key role in resolution of these challenges. Indeed, in addition environmentally friendly and reliable source of energy, the peaceful atom also contributes to development of science, education, medicine, agriculture, and access to water resources. It is worth to specifically emphasize that impetus that is provided by construction of a nuclear power plant to economic growth of each country, which makes the appropriate conclusion».

Alexey Likhachev, the General Director of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, said that the achievements of nuclear industry influence all areas of human activities. «Peaceful atom is connected with all sustainable development goals set forth by the United Nations. At this forum we will discuss the latest technologies that will underpin the future of our planet», - Alexey Likhachev said. He noted that the atomic energy is unrivaled as the most environmentally friendly form of energy and emphasized that the energy sector should primarily struggle against the carbon dioxide emissions. «If today there were no nuclear power plants, the air would contain more 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide», - head of Rosatom said.

In the framework of the Forum, Gleb Efremov, the General Director of JSC International Uranium Enrichment Centre, held a series of negotiations with leaders of companies-shareholders of the Centre, as well as with potential participants on the possible accession. The parties noted the high status of the event and its significance for discussion and resolution of the most important issues. In particular, they emphasized the opportunities for cooperation, exchange of experience between the partners concerned, building mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries.

At the exhibition site of the Forum has been demonstrated a wide range of applications of advanced nuclear technologies, new products and unique solutions. JSC International Uranium Enrichment Centre presented the exposition reflecting the activities of the company contributing to ensuring equal and guaranteed access of all countries to the benefits of atomic energy. The video demonstrated at the exhibition booth of the Center attracted interest of foreign and Russian participants. The video by means of 3D and animation tools demonstrates an alternative to development of own uranium enrichment capabilities for a nuclear embarking country. The embarking country that wishes to enter the nuclear club has an option to go without high expenditures for construction of such facilities and bring the political risks to zero. Membership in the IUEC is an easy way to ensure the guaranteed supplies of uranium enrichment services at the intergovernmental level.

One of the significant events at ATOMEXPO 2019 was opening of the park «Green Square» in Sochi Olympic Avenue (the concept of «green square» involves development of energy sector on the basis of four carbon-free sources: wind, water, sun and the nuclear). This park is the contribution of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom in infrastructure development of Imeretin district in Sochi . The opening ceremony and the first planting of seedlings was attended by the heads of the IAEA, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, the World Nuclear Association and the Rosatom. The park basis became the plants that formed the exhibition «Sustainable Development Areas» in the framework of the Forum, and the central element will be the olive tree − the main symbol of ATOMEXPO 2019.
