The amount of enriched uranium supplied to the Ukrainian NPPs hits 25 million dollars

September 11, 2015

LONDON, September, 11 /TASS/. The total amount of enriched uranium supplied by JSC IUEC (Rosatom’s daughter company) to the Ukrainian NPPs by commercial contracts during 4 last years has reached 25 million dollars. This is what Gleb Efremov, the IUEC Commercial Director, told to the Agency on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Association Symposium.

«We make annual contracts, but generally we act within the framework of our basic agreement that was signed for the period of up to 2017”, - he said. «The total transaction amount, taking into account the 2015 supplies, will exceed $25 million, which is a very good result for us». Mr. Efremov noted that during the past 4 years of cooperation with the Ukraine there were neither interruptions nor changes in the agreed contract terms.

He also marked that the IUEC brought in raw uranium from the Ukraine to be enriched and further used to manufacture nuclear fuel for the Ukrainian nuclear power plants. According to Mr. Efremov’s words, Ukrainian uranium is under processing now and in the beginning of October it is planned to get enriched uranium product that will be transferred to JSC «TVEL» (Rosatom’s fuel company) for nuclear fuel manufacturing.

When answering the question about possible changes in future contract terms and supply volumes, Mr. Efremov said that for the time being the Ukraine side had not sent any advice. «We’re fulfilling the current contracts and have had no discussion about future supplier so far. We may revert to the issue in November», - he concluded. «We’re open and very flexible about it; usually, depending on our Ukrainian counterparts’ interest, we first discuss the matter and then on the bases of their request we make our commercial proposal in the form of a contract for the coming year».

The IUEC shareholders are the State Corporation Rosatom (70% of shares), NAC «Kazatomprom» (10%), CJSC «Armenian nuclear power plant» (10%) and the State concern «Nuclear fuel» (the Ukraine with 10% shares). In proportion to their shares in the IUEC authorized capital stock, member countries get uranium enrichment quotas. For the first time the Ukraine used such option to make procurements for its nuclear power plants in 2012. Since then yearly supplies have amounted 60,000 SWU (separative work unit).
